Lawrence Taylor, the New York Giants’ All-Pro linebacker, entered a written plea of not guilty to an alcohol-related charge and waived a court appearance, the Saddle Brook, N.J., township prosecutor said.

Prosecutor Joseph Mecca Jr. said he is awaiting police reports and results of alcohol tests, and expects to decide this week whether to proceed with a charge of driving while under the influence of alcohol or recommend it be dropped.

The results of Taylor’s Breathalyzer test showed a blood alcohol level of .09%. Under New Jersey law .10 is legally drunk.

“The plain and simple charge is drunk driving,” said attorney James Acheson. “(But) he was neither driving nor was he intoxicated (as indicated) by the test used by the police department.”
