Northern California’s 2,900 state lotto terminals were out of operation for two hours when a fire-control system malfunctioned, shutting down the lottery’s northern computer center and forcing evacuation of its operators. Lottery officials said they were uncertain of the total in lost sales for the period. Authorities said they did not know the cause of the false alarm, but were investigating. The state’s other 4,400 Lotto terminals, which log bets into the Southern California computer center, were not affected.
