SportScope : Parnelli Jones and Son in Grand Prix

The Rolling Hills father-son duo of Parnelli and P. J. Jones will be in the field of the pro/celebrity auto race April 15 at Long Beach. The event is part of the three-day Long Beach Grand Prix.

Contestants race identical street cars over a 1.67-mile course to be used by the Indy cars in the finale April 16. Also in the field are auto racer Dan Gurney, comedian Jay Leno, actress Cornelia Guest, actors Danny Glover, Ricky Schroder, Kelsey Grammer, Brian Wimmer and Terence Knox, former professional football players Lyle Alzado and Walter Payton and media personalities Ken Minyard, Tony Hernandez, Fred Roggin and Paul Moyer.

The Rancho Palos Verdes track and field team for youths begins its 11th season Wednesday with practice at Palos Verdes High School. Boys and girls aged 8-14 train for major youth meets. They practice on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday from 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. The cost is $56. For more information call Coach Barry Sacks at 541-4566.

Positions are open for two-pitch slow-pitch softball and over-the-line tournaments in April and May by calling 866-8685. The cost for over-the-line is $33 per team and for softball $160. Divisional play throughout Southern California for men, women and co-ed teams is available. The events are sponsored by Southern California Over-the-Line.

Sprint cars invade Ascot Raceway on Saturday at 8 p.m. in the California Racing Assn. series. Sunday night the NASCAR series for pro stocks continues. Also on tap are bomber Figure 8 and oval cars and hobby stocks. Action begins at 6.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills baseball team plays host to Cal Poly Pomona in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. doubleheader Saturday at noon. It is part of a four-game series that begins today at 2:30 at Pomona and concludes Tuesday at Pomona at 3. Dominguez Hills (10-12-1 overall) is 5-4 in CCAA play, half a game behind first-place Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Pomona is 6-5.
