San Diego police are investigating a shooting by two officers chasing a man involved in a traffic stop, police said Tuesday.

The incident began when officers William Griffin and Skip Melhorn saw a car with three occupants run a stop sign about 11:53 p.m. Monday. When police pulled the car over in the 2700 block of Broadway, one of the men jumped out and fled south on 27th Street, police said.

Melhorn chased the man, identified as Delfino D. Padilla, 28. After a brief foot chase, Padilla turned and allegedly pointed a handgun at Melhorn.

Police said Melhorn drew his pistol and shot twice in the direction of Padilla, who continued to run before he was eventually caught by other police officers who responded to the scene.

Padilla, who was not injured, was found to be in possession of ammunition for a .357 magnum pistol, but no weapon was found. He was booked at County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and parole violation, police said.
