From Times staff and wire service reports

A man driving the wrong way on the Garden Grove Freeway smashed head-on into another driver, injuring both of them, and set off a chain-reaction accident that shut down the eastbound lanes of the freeway for a few hours early today.

Leonard M. Gonzales, 40, of Long Beach was driving west in the eastbound lanes of the freeway about 1:15 a.m. today when his car collided with a pickup driven by Ralph D. Robson, 31, of Riverside, a CHP spokeswoman said.

Two other drivers crashed when they swerved to avoid the accident.

Gonzales, who suffered several broken bones and other injuries, was arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving, CHP spokeswoman Leslie Hill said. He was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center for treatment. Robson, who also suffered broken bones, was taken to Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center.
