Iran, retaliating for a similar move by Turkey, recalled its Turkish ambassador for consultation. The tit-for-tat recalls were the culmination of a rift that began when Iran criticized a ban on the wearing of traditional Islamic headdresses by women students at Turkish universities. Tehran’s Islamic Republic News Agency said that Ambassador Manuchehr Mottaki “was summoned . . . for consultations following the recent unprincipled and unfriendly (stand) of the Turkish government.” The Turkish Foreign Ministry announced Monday that Ankara was recalling its ambassador in Tehran, and it accused Iran of interfering in Turkey’s internal affairs.
