Cudahy : Thurman Becomes Mayor; Graffio Is Mayor Pro Tem

Thomas Thurman has been selected as mayor of Cudahy under the City Council’s annual reorganization.

Thurman, who is serving his first four-year term on the council, will be mayor for the first time. Thurman, 34, was elected to the council in April, 1986.

Joseph Graffio, 78, was chosen mayor pro tem. Graffio, who was elected to the council in 1982, previously served as mayor in 1986.

Thurman was elected by a 4-0 vote with Councilman Wilfred Colon abstaining. Graffio received a 4-0 vote with Councilman John O. Robertson abstaining.

The mayor’s position is primarily an honorary one. He presides over the regular meetings of the five-member council and represents the city at various functions.

In addition to his mayoral selection, Thurman was recently elected treasurer of the 67-member California Contract Cities Assn. The association is made up of cities that contract for such services as fire and police protection.
