Orange County Man to Represent U.S. at England’s Windsor Horse Show

Fullerton College graduate Randy McFarland, 36, has been chosen to represent the United States in the May 12 to 14 Windsor Horse Show and Combined Driving Event in Windsor, England, and is the first driver selected from the western United States to compete in the event.

The selection of McFarland, a Sunny Hills High graduate, was based on considerations including personal recommendations from judges who have seen him compete and his record of 15 victories in 21 events.

McFarland, a certified prosthetist-orthotist, scored his biggest victory in March by winning the Southwest Regional Championship in Greeley, Colo.

Fullerton Fire Chief Ron Coleman, who also serves as president of the International Assn. of Fire Chiefs, has been named one of four judges on a nationwide selection committee for the “Shining Example Awards.” The awards, to be given by Turtle Wax Inc., a car products company, will be for acts of heroism.

Fountain Valley resident Dan Martin, who was nominated by the local Rotary Club, was named Citizen of the Year by the Fountain Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Cypress College students Andrew Fu of Cypress, John Glass Jr. of Anaheim and Joseph Didonato of Cerritos, won gold medals in automotive categories in the recent California Region Vocational Industrial Clubs of America Skill Olympics at Rio Honodo College. James Tusko of Cypress won a silver medal in the automotive collision category and Masaki Miyamoto of Brea, won a silver medal in welding.

Dr. Gordon G. Globus, a UC Irvine professor of psychiatry and philosophy, has been appointed vice chair for the university service at Capistrano by the Sea Hospital.

The service was organized in 1980 by Globus in alliance with UC Irvine and the private psychiatric hospital in Dana Point. The alliance is unique in the UC system and has become a national model for successful cooperation between public and privately owned institutions.

A UC Irvine faculty member since 1968, Globus is credited with establishing the department of psychiatry, psychophysiology laboratory and the psychotherapy clinic. An expert on dreams, he recently wrote a book entitled “Dream Life, Wake Life.”

Balboa Island Ferry boat operator Matthew Sellers was given the Newport Beach Villa Nova Restaurant Outstanding Citizen Award for helping rescue two people after they accidentally drove their car into the water. Sellers, a Newport Beach resident, was making his final run of the day when the car went sailing into the water near his boat. “I couldn’t believe my eyes,” he said.

Three teachers and two career guidance technicians in the Tustin Unified School District have received the Tustin Rotary Club’s “Good Idea Awards” given to encourage classroom teachers to promote new ideas and methodology and improve the quality of instruction.

The winners are teachers Margie Carry, Jill Kuskie and Barbara McDaniel and guidance technicians Barbara Murrieta and Barbara Schultz.

The five will share $1,000, which can only be used for materials and supplies.
