Bradley’s Record Deserved to Fall

Share

One of the cheesiest records in major sports finally fell when Glen Rice passed Bill Bradley as the highest scorer in NCAA tournament history. Bradley set his record in 1965 by playing the whole game and scoring 56 points, almost at will, as Princeton routed Wichita State in the meaningless consolation game (which is no longer played).

UCLA guard Gail Goodrich, on the other hand, played only half the game in the semifinal when UCLA also blew Wichita State off the court and then shattered an NCAA final-game record by scoring 42 points in leading UCLA to its second straight title in the pressure-cooker final against Michigan.

Bradley, however, was named player of the tournament. Now, at least, his name is scratched from the top of the scoring list.
