Trevino Earns Exemption for Next Year

Share

Lee Trevino’s hopes for his first Masters championship ended with his 81 for the third round, but he did earn an invitation to play again next year.

By shooting a 69 in Sunday’s final round, Trevino tied for 18th. The top 24 finishers in the Masters receive an automatic exemption for the next year’s tournament.

Trevino, 49, had an inconsistent four days--67-74-81-69--for a total of 291, eight strokes behind winner Nick Faldo.

Trevino, who is known for disliking the layout and for pleading with officials never to invite him back, had changed his tune this season. But his five-year Masters exemption for winning the 1984 PGA championship was about to expire. Masters winners are awarded lifetime exemptions--but this is the only major tournament Trevino has never won.

Now, he has another chance.
