The final winners of the 11th annual Joanna Hodges piano competition were announced during a gala winners concert Saturday night at the Bob Hope Cultural Center in Palm Desert. William Nauman, 26, from New York, was the big winner with a fully paid performance with the Academy of London Orchestra and a recital in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Amb Hyung-Sook Kim, 23, of New Haven, Conn., won a performance with the Sao Paolo Symphony of Brazil, while Sandra Lau, 22, of New York will perform with the International Chamber Ensemble of Rome. Ye Zhu, 13, of Monterey Park won a performance with the Colorado Philharmonic National Repertory Orchestra. Nobody won the Carnegie Recital Hall performance in New York because competition judges felt that the two finalists didn’t qualify, contest officials said.
