Champions of the Western Soccer League and the East Coast-based American Soccer League will meet in San Jose Sept. 9 in a national championship game.
The two leagues also will begin laying the foundation for a merger that will establish a professional circuit of at least 20 teams by 1992 as part of the United States Soccer Federation’s plan to build a three-tiered national professional program.
