Japan’s Trade Gap With U.S. Widens: Japan’s trade surplus with the United States shot up again in March, rising to $4.13 billion from $3.40 billion a year ago, a development that is likely to spur friction between the two nations, economists said. “The continued expansion is going to frustrate U.S. politicians,” said economist Hidehiro Iwaki at NRI & NCC, the research arm of Nomura Securities. Japan’s surplus with the United States has climbed four of the past five months, destroying 10 months of declines up to October, 1988.
