A man described by British police as “overexcited,” lunged at Princess Diana while she was shaking hands with a crowd at a workshop for the mentally handicapped in Cramlington, about 300 miles north of London. The man, who was not identified, was questioned by police and then released without being charged. He jumped over railings near Diana, who stepped back in surprise, said Gordon McMurchie, of the Northumbria police. He managed to place his hand on Diana’s arm before being wrestled away by the princess’ bodyguard.
