Jazz Ballet to Kick Off CSLA Theater Season

A jazz ballet based on “The Wizard of Oz” inaugurates the spring season this weekend for the Cal State L.A. department of theater and arts. “Wizard,” conceived, written and directed by Cal State professor John Pasqualetti in collaboration with Jason Anderson, runs tonight at 8, Sunday at 2 p.m. and next Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the university’s State Playhouse.

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright August Wilson will open May 12 and play Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through May 21. A dinner-theater presentation (champagne brunch on Sundays) will be held in the Alumni Lounge of the Student Union, the package will cost $18 for adults, $12 for students, seniors and season subscribers.

Concluding the season will be “Castles Made of Sand,” a new play by Theater Arts major Robert Villanueva, premiering on May 26 and playing weekends through June 4.

Tickets for “Wizard” and “Castles” are $6 for adults, $5 for faculty and staff, $2 for students and seniors.
