Cincinnati Post Cleared of Libel by Appeals Court
An Ohio appeals court has cleared the Cincinnati Post in a libel lawsuit filed by an ambulance service and its owner over stories describing its response to a fatal stampede at a rock concert.
The Ohio 1st District Court of Appeals on Wednesday upheld a lower court ruling that the newspaper did not libel National Medic Services Corp. and its owner, Victor Guy Ninio.
They sued in June, 1980, claiming they were libeled by stories in the Post that reported that the ambulance company was ill-equipped to handle injuries at a Dec. 3, 1979, rock concert by The Who at Riverfront Coliseum. Eleven people died in the stampede at the concert.
The appeals court upheld a county judge’s ruling that there was no libel because the stories were true.
