SDSU, Plantenberg Defeat Oral Roberts

San Diego State opened a 3-0 lead and went on to defeat Oral Roberts, 8-4, Sunday in a nonconference baseball game in Tulsa, Okla.

Erik Plantenberg (5-3) got the victory and reliever John Marshall entered the game for an inning and got his first save.

Anthony Johnson went two for four with two RBIs and Mike Bitter was two for five and scored twice for the Aztecs (26-18). Oral Roberts dropped to 32-13.

The University of San Diego’s school record for consecutive baseball losses was extended to 14 when it dropped a 19-3 West Coast Athletic Conference game to visiting Santa Clara (30-15, 8-4). Torero pitcher Jim Westlund tied the school mark for career appearances at 82 while USD dropped to 15-25-1, 1-14.

BIATHLON

Holly Farr of Cardiff won the women’s division of the West Coast Championship of Summer Biathlon at the South Bay Rod and Gun Club in Dulzura.

Farr completed the 5K run and two shooting stages of the rifle marksmanship event in 26 minutes 53 seconds. Keith Woodard of East Corinth, Vt., won the men’s division in 19:19. Wayne Buckingham of Encinitas was second in 22:59.

MEN’S TENNIS

Freshman Jose Luis Noriega, USD’s No. 1 player, had his academic eligibility restored and helped lead the Toreros to a 5-1 victory over 13th-ranked Pepperdine (12-9) in a West Coast Athletic Conference match in Malibu.

Noriega defeated Grant Saacks, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Fifteenth-ranked USD improved to 23-6.

SOFTBALL

Nevada Las Vegas swept a Big West Conference doubleheader from host SDSU, shutting out the Aztecs, 5-0, in the first game and taking the second game, 5-2. The Aztecs are 17-27-1, 9-17; UNLV is 23-21, 11-13.
