Fox’s new release, “Say Anything,” had a respectable opening, but ticket sales didn’t measure up to the positive critical response the film has received. The teen romance starring John Cusack and Ione Skye grossed $4 million at 1,113 theaters, a per-screen average of $3,646. The latest release from the troubled Weintraub Entertainment Group, “She’s Out of Control,” grossed $3.7 million at 987 theaters, an average of $3,701 per screen. Meanwhile, Paramount’s baseball movie, “Major League,” held strong, dropping just 20% from its opening last week.

*”Winter People,” the Kelly McGillis-Kurt Russell film chosen to kick off the AFI/LA FilmFest last week, had a weak opening at 298 theaters, grossing $760,000, or $2,550 per screen.
