United Telecommunications Corp.: Citing a strong performance by all of its units, with US Sprint stepping solidly into profitability, the Kansas City, Mo.-based telecommunications firm reported a 122% increase in first-quarter profit on an 18% rise in revenue. The company posted net income for the three months ended March 31 of $76.4 million, up from $34.4 million in the first quarter of 1988. Revenue totaled $1.77 billion, compared to $1.5 billion in 1988. US Sprint’s operating income of $27.5 million in the quarter contrasted with a loss of $124 million a year earlier. The company also noted that its local telephone operations and complementary businesses maintained their momentum in the first quarter.
