Thousands of students demanding the overthrow of President Roh Tae Woo battled riot police today with firebombs and rocks in at least 10 cities, and protesters attacked a U.S. military base in Seoul.

Police firing tear gas battled students in campus and street clashes marking the anniversary of the April 19, 1960, student revolt that toppled the Syngman Rhee government. Violent protests were reported in Seoul, Kwangju, Chonju, Chungju, Pusan, Taejon, Wonju, Kangnung, Chunchon and Iri.

“Execute Roh Tae Woo!” and “Yankee, go home!” students screamed as they beat drums and brass gongs.

A band of protesters hurled about 20 firebombs into the U.S. Army’s Camp Isabell in Seoul during the night but caused only minor damage, police and U.S. military officials said. The protesters fled before they could be caught.

The news agency Yonhap said about 37,000 students took part in protests at 112 colleges nationwide.
