THE COLLEGES : Community College Tennis : Saddleback Clinches 11th Consecutive Title


Saddleback College won five of six singles sets to defeat Orange Coast, 6-3, Tuesday to clinch the Orange Empire Conference men’s tennis title at Saddleback.

It was the 11th consecutive conference title for the Gauchos (18-1, 11-0).

Ed Peregrino and Carl Hines led the Gauchos in singles. Peregrino defeated John Gabriel, 6-1, 7-6, and Hines defeated Eric Riebitzer, 7-6, 6-1.


Jamil Atcha and Stan Sanders were the only Saddleback doubles team to win, defeating Nick Norin and Dave Moore, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Orange Coast is 9-2 in conference play.

Golden West 9, Fullerton 0--Robert Lucas defeated Michael Cafarchia, 6-3, 6-1, for the Rustlers (6-14, 5-6) at Golden West.

Rancho Santiago 6, Cypress 3--No. 3 doubles team of Omar Sary and John Fung defeated Al Christi and Moses Kim, 6-4, 6-0, to clinch the match for Rancho Santiago (10-7, 6-5) at Cypress. Eric Glade defeated Alex Veindis, 6-1, 6-4, for Cypress (10-8, 4-6).
