Bubba Shobert, three-time U.S. motorcycle champion, remained in critical condition at San Jose Medical Center with head injuries suffered in an accident after the finish of the U.S. International Grand Prix at Laguna Seca Raceway last Sunday.

The hospital said that the extent of any brain damage would not be known for four or five days.

Shobert, of Carmel Valley in Northern California, had finished ninth and was riding beside third-place finisher Eddie Lawson on the victory lap after the race had ended. As the two talked, fourth-place finisher Kevin Magee of Australia slowed abruptly, his fuel tank just about dry.

Shobert’s motorcycle slammed into the rear of Magee’s bike, sending the two of them sliding off the track.
