Culver City : Teachers Union Complains

Share

The Culver City Federation of Teachers has filed an unfair labor practice complaint with the state Public Employment Relations Board against the union that replaced the federation as the teachers’ bargaining agent.

The federation alleges that the Culver City Teachers Assn., which was elected as the new representative last May, misrepresented the terms of a contract presented to the teachers for ratification last fall.

David Mielke, president of the federation, said the contract was presented as a 6% salary increase. However, since 2% of the raise is coming from the 1989-90 budget, the raise is actually only 4%.

Mielke said teachers only discovered the discrepancy in January when the contract was printed and distributed to teachers.

“By misrepresenting the financial structure of our raises, the teachers were not represented fairly,” said Mielke, a science teacher at Culver Park High School. “Teachers need to know how the deal is cut before ratifying it.”

Bess Doerr, president of the teachers association, could not be reached for comment.
