A man who fell into a 35-foot-deep construction hole in Woodland Hills on Thursday night escaped with minor injuries, authorities said.

The 22-year-old man, whom authorities did not immediately identify, was showing a relative the site of a crane accident when he stepped back and fell down the square hole, about 30 inches by 30 inches, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells said. The hole had been dug for a foundation piling, authorities said.

A crane on the construction site next door to the house where the man lives had fallen over earlier in the day, authorities said.

The man’s fall was cushioned by 2 feet of mud at the bottom of the hole, authorities said. Firefighters rescued the man about 40 minutes after the accident occurred at 8:30 p.m. in the 4200 block of Ensenada Drive, Wells said.

The man was being treated for minor cuts and bruises at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, Wells said.
