More than $22,000 worth of expensive men’s suits, dress shoes and jogging clothes at two South Coast Plaza department stores have been slashed, Costa Mesa police said Wednesday.

A sharp instrument was used to slash 1- to 1 1/2-inch cuts in the upper left back sides of jackets and the tops of shoes at Nordstrom and Bullock’s, officers said.

Bullock’s reported that 21 jackets, all dark blue or dark gray pinstripe designer suits priced at $375 to $900 each, were vandalized. Nordstrom reported 10 jackets from jogging suits worth $170 each, two pairs of dress shoes worth more than $200 each and nine suits worth $355 to $1,095 were slashed. In all cases, jacket sizes ranged from 36 to 44.

More than $48,000 in men’s suits in the same size range were slashed in the same manner between November, 1986, and July, 1987, at stores in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa. Police wouldn’t speculate on it being the work of the same person.
