A 4-year-old Sylmar boy was killed when he tumbled from the front seat of a driverless, runaway car when the vehicle struck a curb, Los Angeles police said Sunday.

Police said the boy, whose name was not released, was sitting in his father’s 1972 Ford Maverick in the 13300 block of Pasha Place at about 4 p.m. Saturday when the vehicle slipped into gear and began traveling in reverse. His father was attempting to close the hood of the car when it began moving, authorities said.

When the car hit the curb the front door opened and the boy fell from the seat, hitting his head on the curb.
