Gun-Control Legislation

Share

How inappropriate that Gov. George Deukmejian would stall the Roos-Roberti anti-assault weapon legislation because he doesn’t think that those “who may neglect or choose not to register the gun should be found guilty” (Part I, April 25).

The registration provision wasn’t put in the legislation to make current owners of assault weapons outlaws, but rather to enable them to legally keep their weapons after the ban on further sales goes into effect. Surely, law-abiding citizens would comply.

As the governor considers this legislation, he would do well to remember what he said in January after five schoolchildren were killed and 29 were wounded in Stockton:

“I, just for the life of me, cannot see why anybody who is going to use a gun just for sporting purposes would need to have a military assault-type weapon . . . “ (Part I, Jan. 20). He might also reflect on his comments at the children’s funeral: “Your pain is our pain. Your loss is our loss” (Part I, Jan. 24).

We need to stop our losses!
