An 80-year-old woman waiting at a bus stop was critically injured Thursday afternoon when a car idling at a nearby service station slipped into reverse and hit her.

The freak accident was reported at 3:32 p.m. in the 13800 block of Red Hill Avenue near El Camino Real. The victim, Aletta Streeter of Tustin, was taken to United Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where she was listed in critical condition Thursday evening.

Driver Barbara Greeland, 45, of Santa Ana, had stopped at the Mobil service station on Red Hill and got out of her car to ask a question, Tustin police spokesman Bryan Meder said. She left her 1967 Mustang running, with the gear shift in park, Meder said.

Meder said that the car slipped into reverse but that why it did so is not known. It moved backward at a slow speed, striking Streeter, who was sitting on a bus bench nearby. The runaway vehicle then entered Red Hill, colliding with a northbound Volvo. No injuries were reported in that accident.
