A 28-year-old Anaheim man was held on $250,000 bail today on suspicion of shooting a retired Buena Park police captain in a robbery last month at the victim’s Buena Park flower shop.

Jerry D. Dunham was arrested Thursday night and booked at Orange County Jail on suspicion of armed robbery and attempted murder. (Earlier story, Part II, Page 3.)

Retired Capt. Robert Coovert was shot in the head and chest at his florist shop in the 6000 block of Orangethorpe Avenue on April 24. He underwent surgery to remove his kidney and spleen and to repair his left eye and is in good condition today, hospital officials said.

At a meeting of local robbery investigators last month, Buena Park police received information that Dunham might be linked to the Coovert shooting, police spokesman Richard McMillen said. Police are investigating whether Dunham is tied to any other robberies in the city.

Dunham was arrested in his room at the Ha’Penny Inn at 2630 W. Lincoln Ave. in Anaheim after officers from the Anaheim special weapons team staked out the building Thursday afternoon, McMillen said.
