Observatories
I wish that Griffith Park Observatory were as dull, disappointing and uninteresting as “Mount Palomar” (letter, May 1). Part of the quality experience of visiting Mt. Palomar is the clean air, evergreen smell, and its delightful isolation.
I have enjoyed reading about the 200-inch telescope since 1955, but I only visited the site for the first time last month. I had no difficulty at all in interpreting the diagrams, having done my homework 34 years ago!
Even the most casual study of astronomy requires at least an 8th grade reading ability, and here is where Griffith Park Observatory errs. Any summer weekday finds the Hall of Science jammed with shrieking, undisciplined, greasy-fingered 3rd graders jostling each other for a chance to push the buttons on the exhibits.
