Soviet Defector, Sabres Await Official Rulings

The Buffalo Sabres apparently have completed contract negotiations with former Soviet hockey star Alexander Mogilny, who defected last week, but no announcement is expected until his status is determined.
Sabre General Manager Gerry Meehan flew to Buffalo with Mogilny, 20, but the team is awaiting confirmation on his immigration status as well as eligibility rulings from the National Hockey League and international hockey officials.
