Italian soprano Katia Ricciarelli quit the La Scala opera house in Milan on Sunday after being booed in her first performance there in four years. La Scala said American Kallen Esperian, 27, a protege of Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti, would replace her. Ricciarelli, 43, told La Scala management she would not sing in future performances of Verdi’s “Luisa Miller” and accused the opera house of staging a shoddy performance. The audience jeered even before she began singing during Tuesday’s first night, and after another bad reception the following night Ricciarelli blamed management for economizing on the production and vowed never to set foot in the opera house again.
