Cowboys, Sooners Fight for 35 Minutes
Oklahoma State and Oklahoma have one of the country’s longest sports rivalries, and Sunday night, during their Big Eight Conference baseball game, the Cowboys and Sooners took part in one of the longest sports brawls.
The fight, which lasted 35 minutes, took place in the sixth inning. It started after Oklahoma’s Paul Oster collided with catcher Paul O’Callaghan as he was thrown out at the plate. Cowboy pitcher Carl Myer hit Oklahoma’s next batter, John Douglass, in the shoulder with a curve ball and that emptied both benches.
In all, 12 players and two assistant coaches were ejected. Oklahoma State Coach Gary Ward announced after the game that he suspended players Mike Gardella and Bobby Perna for taking part in the fight.
As for the outcome of the game, Greg Walbergh hit a three-run homer with two out in the bottom of the ninth to give Oklahoma State a 13-10 victory.
