Stanley Cup Playoffs : Canadiens Ground Flyers, 3-0, and Lead Series, 3-1

Patrick Roy stopped 17 shots for his second shutout in three games and Montreal scored all its goals in a 7:31 span of the second period Sunday night as the Canadiens took a commanding 3-1 lead in the Wales Conference finals with a 3-0 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.

Roy, who has allowed one goal in the last three games, was aided by a stifling defense that limited the Flyers to nine shots in the last two periods. It was his third career playoff shutout and 10th victory in 11 starts in these playoffs.

The Canadiens, who have won three straight games after losing the series opener, can advance to the Stanley Cup finals with a victory at home Tuesday night.

Roy and Philadelphia’s Ron Hextall, returning after missing four games with a knee injury, kept the game scoreless until just after the midway point of the second period when Montreal’s Shayne Corson tucked in his own rebound.

Chris Chelios made it 2-0 at 13:57 with Montreal on a five-on-three power play and Guy Carbonneau put the game away at 17:40 with a shorthanded goal on a breakaway after stealing Mark Howe’s pass.

The Canadiens again defused the Flyers’ power play, ranked No. 1 in the NHL during the regular season. Philadelphia was shutout in four power plays Sunday and had no shots on goal during the first three. Montreal has killed off all 15 Flyer power plays in the four games.
