Kristen Walls Will Compete for UCLA

Kristen Walls, a two-time defending section diving champion from Monte Vista High School, has signed a national letter of intent with UCLA. Walls selected UCLA over Princeton and Stanford.

TENNIS

Second-seeded Pat Fraser, a San Diego native who now resides in Palm Desert, upset defending champion and top-seeded Dorothy Matthiessen, from Pasadena, 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 6-3, in the 50s singles finals of the women’s National Hardcourt Seniors Championships at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.

Jeanne Dattan of San Diego and Peggie Landtroop of Dallas beat Dorothy Cheney of Santa Monica and Corky Murdock of Beverly Hills, 6-3, 6-4, to win the women’s 60s doubles title.

In the men’s club finals, Vincent Fotre of Newport Beach beat Bob Seymour of Del Mar, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, for the men’s 65s singles championship.

BASEBALL

University of San Diego overcame 12 walks from five pitchers to give Coach John Cunningham his 600th career victory, 12-9, over host Cal State Northridge in a nonconference game.

USD’s Lou Skertich came out of the bullpen to retire Greg Schocky with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth.

GOLF

U.S. International’s Allison Shapcott leads the California Collegiate women’s tournament at Palo Alto after one round with a three-under-par 70. San Diego State’s Karen Engberg is one stroke back at 71, Wendy Kaupp of SDSU is two back and USIU’s Tupito Walker is three back.

USIU leads team scoring with a 301. San Jose State and San Diego are tied at 302.
