BEACH RESCUES
The busy period is approaching for lifeguards at Los Angeles County’s beaches. Records compiled by the lifeguards for last June, July and August show that Santa Monica Beach was the scene of the most rescues, 475, of any of the county’s 10 busiest beaches. But there were almost as many rescues at Malibu’s Zuma Beach, which had far fewer visitors but is known for its strong riptides. In all, there were five drownings reported during the three-month peak season in 1988--two at Abalone Cove (off Rancho Palos Verdes) and one each at El Porto (north of Manhattan Beach), Hermosa and Santa Monica beaches. Three of the drownings occurred when there were no lifeguards on duty.
