Brad Gilbert and Michael Chang, the top two seeded players, were extended to three sets by two qualifiers before winning their first-round matches Tuesday in the $220,000 U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships at Charleston, S.C.
Gilbert trailed, 5-2, in the first set before defeating Joey Rive of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., 7-6, (10-8), 3-6, 6-1.
Chang didn’t get the edge over Jimmy Brown of Largo, Fla., until the ninth game of the third set when he broke Brown’s serve to take a 5-4 lead. Chang, who often came to the net, then served out the match for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory on the cold, windy day.
“In this kind of situation, I had to come into the net because I wasn’t going to put the ball away from the back,” Chang said.
Goran Ivanisevic of Yugoslavia upset defending champion Kent Carlsson of Sweden, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1, in the second round of the German Open men’s tournament at Hamburg, West Germany.
Ivanisevic, 16, was a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open and a semifinalist at the Nice tournament last month. In another upset, Jan Gunnarsson of Sweden defeated Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union, 6-4, 6-3.
Jimmy Connors advanced with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over qualifier Markus Zoecke of West Germany.
Manuela Maleeva led a parade of favorites through the second round of the Italian Open women’s championships at Rome.
Second-seeded Maleeva of Bulgaria defeated Italy’s Barbara Romano, 6-3, 6-2, third-seeded Helen Kelesi of Canada defeated 17-year-old Silvia Farina of Italy, 6-2, 6-2, and fourth-seeded Aranxta Sanchez eliminated Linda Ferrando of Italy, 7-5, 6-1.
