The NHL will hold a hearing next week to decide whether to take disciplinary action against Philadelphia goaltender Ron Hextall, a league spokeswoman said today.

Hextall left his goal crease in the Flyers’ game against Montreal Thursday night and attacked Canadiens’ defenseman Chris Chelios, sparking a brawl in the closing minutes of the Wales Conference final game. Hextall was given a major and a match penalty by referee Don Koharski.

Montreal won the game 4-2 and the series 4-2, advancing to the Stanley Cup finals against the Calgary Flames.

NHL Vice President Brian O’Neill discussed the incident today with officials and was waiting to receive videotape of the game, the spokeswoman said. The hearing will be held in Calgary or Toronto.

If disciplinary action is taken against Hextall, it probably will be in the form of a suspension at the start of the 1989-90 season.
