A convenience market clerk was killed Monday afternoon when he peeked out of a stockroom during a robbery and was shot in the head, Santa Ana police said.

The 22-year-old victim’s name was not released, pending notification of relatives in Mexico, Sgt. George Saadeh said.

A bandit entered the Lucky Center Market, 3502 W. 5th St., about 5:20 p.m. and demanded money from the cash register, police said. After taking all the cash, he demanded that the store owner, who was not identified, hand over his wallet.

As the owner complied, the clerk in the stockroom, 30 to 40 feet away, peeked out. The bandit fired one shot, hitting the clerk in the head and killing him instantly, Saadeh said. The robber then fled.

“We don’t know why he shot him. He may have just gotten scared,” Saadeh said.

The store owner thought the robber had shot into the air and did not realize that the clerk had been killed, Saadeh said. Police described the suspect as Latino; about 20 years old; 5 feet, 8 inches tall; 150 pounds; clean-shaven; with black hair and brown eyes.
