A former Los Angeles school district executive was sentenced Tuesday to two years in prison for masterminding a theft ring that stole at least $1 million in supplies from the district.

Melvin Tokunaga, 43, the fired deputy director of the Los Angeles Unified School District’s operations branch, was ordered to surrender June 1 to begin serving the sentence, imposed by Superior Court Judge Robert Altman.

His sentencing was the final chapter in the theft case in which 21 defendants, including Tokunaga’s wife, Wendy, were convicted. About half of the defendants were district employees “who stole the school district blind,” Dist. Atty. Ira Reiner said.
