Sen. Alan Cranston (D-Calif.) said that he and other Senate Democrats will call more witnesses and demand additional documents on the Iran-Contra scandal if the nomination of Donald P. Gregg, a former top aide to President Bush, to be U.S. ambassador to South Korea is not withdrawn. Cranston, chairman of the Foreign Relations subcommittee on East Asian and Pacific affairs, told the Washington Post that his staff has begun preparing requests for new documents related to what Gregg knew of the Ronald Reagan White House efforts to help the Nicaraguan Contras at a time U.S. military aid to the rebels was banned.
