Four senators proposed to ban use of the chemical Alar on apples and other agricultural products and said they expected fast floor action on their measure. “The train is under way,” Sen. John W. Warner (R-Va.) told a news conference called to announce an Alar ban he said would benefit producers as well as consumers. He indicated he would move to bypass committee action and attach the bill as an amendment to legislation ripe for quick floor action. The bill would reduce to zero the amount of the growth-enhancing chemical that could be used on apples and other crops, primarily grapes, cherries and peanuts. The ban would be effective as soon as it is signed by the President.
