Unseeded Sergi Bruguera of Spain ousted fifth-seeded Jimmy Connors 6-1, 6-1 in the third round of the $1-million Italian Open men’s tennis championships today.

The 37-year-old Connors was no match for the hard-hitting 18-year-old Spaniard, who took less than an hour to beat him.

Connors is Bruguera’s second upset victim in the tournament. In the first round, the 85th-ranked Bruguera ousted No. 13 seed Andres Gomez of Ecuador.

Connors had struggled in his first two matches against qualifiers Cedric Pioline of France and Italy’s Massimo Cierro. Fellow American Andre Agassi, the No. 2 seed, has breezed through the first two rounds.

Bruguera was joined in the quarterfinal round by unseeded Mark Koevermans of the Netherlands and Jordi Arrese of Spain, both of whom registered three-set victories today.

Arrese upset 10th-seeded Darren Cahill of Australia 3-6, 6-3, 7-5. He reached the third round with a surprise victory over No. 7 seed Aaron Krickstein on Wednesday. On Friday Arrese will meet the winner of the match between No. 1 seed Mats Wilander of Sweden and unseeded Jay Berger.

Koevermans won his third match in a row when he beat Italy’s Diego Nargiso 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. The Dutchman, who upset No. 3 seed Kent Carlsson of Sweden in the first round and ousted veteran Jose Luis Clerc of Argentina in the second, will play Bruguera in his quarterfinal match.
