Olympian Young Leads Qualifying at Velodrome

Connie Paraskevin Young, the 1988 Olympic bronze medalist in women’s match sprint, advanced in that event Thursday to the quarterfinals in the Sundance Juice Sparkler Grand Prix of Cycling at the San Diego Velodrome in Balboa Park.

Paraskevin Young, of Indianapolis, remained unbeaten in the match sprint in 1989 with a time of 13.34. In April, she defeated the Soviet Union’s Erika Salamyae, the gold medal winner in Seoul.

Advancing in men’s match sprint qualifying were La Mesa’s Ken Carpenter, a 1988 Olympian, Curt Harnett, a 1988 Canadian Olympian and former San Diegan, and Mark Gorski, the 1984 Olympic gold medalist, who now resides in Indianapolis.

Dan Frost (Copenhagen, Denmark), the 1988 gold medalist in the points race, had the fastest qualifying time in men’s pursuit (4:52.01).

The 100-lap points race final is tonight.

FOOTBALL

The Chargers announced they had waived three defensive backs: Marvin Mattox, a first-year free agent from Kansas; Demetrious Johnson, a sixth-year safety from Missouri, and Ken Hobart, a first-year safety from Idaho. The moves left the roster with 95 players, including 11 unsigned draft choices and several unsigned veteran free agents.

SOCCER

The San Diego Nomads, in first place in the Southern Division of the Western Soccer League after three successful road games, will play the Sacramento Senators Friday night at 7:30 at Balboa Stadium.

Coach Derek Armstrong said the Nomads will have the services of U.S. National team midfielder Marcelo Balboa and may have U.S. team goalie Jeff Duback back if a contract problem with the U.S. Soccer Federation can be worked out.

The Nomads (3-1) defeated Sacramento (3-1), 3-2, on their recent trip, as well as Arizona, 2-0, and San Francisco, 3-2.

GOLF

San Diego State freshman Tim Todd is one of five individual golfers invited to the NCAA West Regional qualifying tournament May 25-27 at El Paso, Tex. One individual and nine of 16 teams will advance to the NCAA championship tournament June 7-10.

San Diego State freshman Cary Evans finished fourth in the decathlon at the Western Athletic Conference championships at New Mexico.
