Gene Farrell, interim vice chancellor of business affairs for Coast Community College District, has been appointed by district trustees to the $78,000-a-year permanent post.

Farrell, who was dean of administrative services at Orange Coast College before assuming the interim position last November, was selected Wednesday from 25 candidates to oversee district finances.

Board President Walter G. Howald praised Farrell as a strong administrator and added, “His affable manner complements his business acumen and long experience in business management.”

Farrell said his first tasks will be to develop a funding formula for distributing money throughout the district and launch a campaign to refurbish aging buildings in the district, which includes Golden West, Coastline and Orange Coast colleges.

Farrell, of Huntington Beach, joined the district in 1969 as an instructor and coach at Golden West College. He was named associate dean and athletic director at Golden West in 1980 and moved up to associate director of business services for the college 2 years later.

Farrell graduated cum laude from Cal State Long Beach in 1962, and received his master’s degree from the same university in 1964. He has done graduate work at Chapman College and Cal State Fullerton and graduated from the Business Management Institute at Stanford University in 1985.
