Former USC quarterback Rodney Peete was among four quarterbacks at the Detroit Lions’ passing camp, and despite not being picked until the sixth round of the National Football League draft, he is given a shot by Lion officials at becoming the starter when training camp opens in July.

Offensive coach June Jones said the deficiencies NFL scouts cited as reasons why Peete was still available in the sixth round haven’t shown up in his practice sessions.

“He doesn’t have a cannon, but he has a good enough arm to be a player in the league,” Jones said. “A lot of times a quarterback is hard to evaluate until he’s in a game situation, but I think he’ll compete.”
