Southern Section Tennis Playoffs : Santa Margarita Gets Playoff First

Santa Margarita High School won six of nine doubles sets to defeat Bellflower, 10-8, Friday in the second round of the Southern Section 1-A boys’ tennis playoffs at Bellflower.

It was the first boys’ team to win in the playoffs since the school was founded in 1988. Santa Margarita, which has only freshmen and sophomores, had a bye in the first round.

The doubles team of Brian Haig and Matt Waugh clinched the match with a 7-5 victory over Bellflower’s No. 3 team. Haig and Waugh split their other two matches, 2-6, 6-2.

Jason Scanlon and Sean Crafts were the Eagles’ top singles players, both winning two of three sets. Scanlon lost, 2-6, and won, 6-2, 6-1. Crafts lost 1-6, and won, 6-2, 6-2.

Santa Margarita is 11-3.

In a 4-A second-round match:

Corona del Mar 16, Fountain Valley 2--Third-seeded Corona del Mar (19-3) swept the doubles matches against visiting Fountain Valley (16-3). Sophomore Jamie Katzman and 6-2, 6-1, 6-1, over Mike Mell, the Sunset League champion. Freshman David Bain defeated Mell, 6-3, and won other two matches, 6-2, 6-1.

El Toro 13, San Marcos 5--Chris Brown swept his matches, 6-0, 6-2, 6-1, and Brian Delbenes swept, 6-0, 6-3, 6-0, to lead El Toro (21-3) at San Marcos (19-3).

In 3-A second-round matches:

Burbank 11, Fullerton 7--Burbank won eight of its points in doubles for the victory at Fullerton. Andy Joe swept his singles matches, 6-0, 6-1, 6-1, for Fullerton (18-3) as did Chris Hartshorn, 6-2, 6-3, 6-1.

La Quinta 13, Cerritos 5--Peter Vu and Phu Truong won their 50th consecutive doubles match, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, to lead La Quinta (20-2). They are 63-4 on the year. Freshman Cong Tran swept in singles, 6-3, 6-0, 6-1, to improve to 60-5, and Jeff Hosilyk swept, 6-4, 6-1, 6-4. La Quinta will play Laguna Beach Tuesday.

Valencia 11, Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 7--Danny Yu swept, 6-3, 6-1, 6-2, and Ryan Takenaga swept, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4, to lead visiting Valencia (17-4).
