Jean Van Poppel of the Netherlands turned on the speed in the final sprint to win the first stop of the Tour of Italy cycling championship at Catania, Sicily.
Van Poppel covered the 123-kilometer course from Taormina to Catania in 2 hours 43 minutes 35 seconds, edging out Giovanni Fidanza of Italy. Adriano Bassi of Italy was third, just ahead of world champion Maurizio Fondreist.
