Eddy Hellebuyck of Belgium spoiled a nearly perfect day for the Soviet national marathon team, beating top-ranked Soviet runner Vladimir Kotov by 22 seconds to win the 12th Cleveland Marathon in a course-record 2 hours 14 minutes 23 seconds.
Soviet runners Irina Bogacheva and Irina Sclyarenko finished first and second in the women’s marathon, with Bogacheva earning the $15,000 first prize.
