Argentina, Sweden Lead in World Cup
Sweden swept past Czechoslovakia 3-0 and Argentina beat Australia 2-1 on the opening day of the World Team Cup tennis tournament today.
Wimbledon champion Stefan Edberg overcame Miloslav Mecir and Anders Jarryd beat Milan Srejber to lead Sweden past Czechoslovakia.
Edberg outlasted Mecir, the Olympic champion, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4, and Jarryd beat Srejber 6-3, 7-5.
The two singles victories gave Sweden an unbeatable 2-0 lead, and the defending champions completed a 3-0 sweep when Edberg and Jarryd teamed to beat Mecir and Srejber 6-3, 6-1 in the doubles.
In its opening “Red Group” match, Argentina also took an unbeatable 2-0 lead over Australia when Guillermo Perez-Roldan beat Darren Cahill 7-5, 6-1 and Martin Jaite defeated Mark Woodforde 6-4, 6-1.
With the winner already decided, Australia salvaged some pride by taking the doubles. Cahill and John Fitzgerald beat Javier Frana and Gustavo Luza 6-3, 7-6.
Also today, Camille Benjamin of the United States upset fifth-seeded Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of the Geneva European Open women’s tennis tournament.
